Discussion Groups

The Internet is a great way to communicate with people who share your interests.  This page lists some of the  moderated discussion groups maintained by researchers of New York State history. Subscription information follows a brief description of each group's purpose.

 

New York State History Electronic Discussion List, NYHIST-L

The New York State history electronic discussion list, NYHIST-L deals with all aspects of New York State history and is intended to be a forum for announcements, discussion, and research inquiries and referrals.

The list focuses exclusively on New York State history. All aspects of New York State's past are of interest to the group, including political, social, military, legal, and religious history. The list is open to students and professionals from many fields as well as to persons who are simply interested in NY history. NYHIST-L will accept general inquiries about sources of information for biography and genealogy in New York. However, genealogical inquiries about specific individuals and families should be submitted to other discussion lists.

Subscriptions to NYHIST-L are free and unrestricted.

  • The New York State Archives provides NYHIST-L as a public and professional service.
  • The State Archives does not verify the accuracy of the submitted messages, nor does it endorse the opinions expressed by message authors.

NYHIST-L is an edited list.

  • The editor of NYHIST-L is James D. Folts, archivist, New York State Archives.
  • The editor reviews all messages submitted to the list and reserves the right to withhold messages that do not conform to the list's purpose.

Buffalo History is a mailing list intended for discussion of the history of the City of Buffalo, New York. Discussion and announcements regarding local history, genealogy, historic preservation, research, libraries, archives, etc. related specifically to the City of Buffalo, New York are appropriate to this list.
